Cloud-Based Data Warehousing on the Increase
Cloud adoption has been on the rise for some time, but most of the migration has been in the form of moving applications to the cloud. Only recently has the cloud become a viable option for data warehousing. According to a recent poll conducted by InformationWeek, cloud-based data warehousing is experiencing the largest increase in adoption of any other category of information management. In 2014, adoption of data warehousing rose from 24 percent to 34 percent, and is expected to continue this hearty increase through this year.

The Cloud Can Supplement On-Site Data Warehouses
A number of factors contribute to this acceptance, among which are the ability to supplement on-site data warehouses with the cloud. This allows greater access to the data, often faster access, and is now a viable option for data analysis as well as warehousing. The cloud is an ideal counterpart to on-site data warehouses, lowering the need for new infrastructure and hardware purchases, as well as reducing demands on the IT staffers. The decision-makers within an organization can have hands-on access to the data they need for business intelligence.
The Cloud Can Provide Better Value
The number one holdup in companies adopting big data strategies is the amount of effort and resources necessary to house and analyze the data. With innovations like Hadoop and NoSQL, along with the use of a cloud-based data warehouse, companies don’t have to make tremendous investments in hardware and infrastructure in order to leverage the benefits of big data. NoSQL adoption is up 7 percent, while Hadoop adoption continues to climb following its acceptance on the open market late last year. With these powerful tools, even businesses that lack room in the budget for an on-site data warehouse can still benefit from the power of big data and big data analysis.
The Cloud is an Ideal Platform for Self-Service Data
As the potential for data becomes clearer to all aspects of the business, all departments within an organization want hands-on access to the data they need to use. Business intelligence is simply better when leaders can get fast access to the data. Using a cloud-based platform, businesses can make this information readily available while keeping IT spending low. Cloud-based data warehousing is also ideal for businesses that lack the funds to maintain a data warehouse on premises, and for environments in which IT workers are needed for other endeavors.
Does this mean that the on-site data warehouse is on the way out? Certainly not. There will always be a need to keep data storage and processing power on site, especially for organizations that house extremely sensitive data or highly regulated data. Adoption of the cloud-based data warehouse is a flexible, inexpensive, and easy to maintain way of collecting, storing, and analyzing data off site.
