Whenever I read, hear, or discuss about data nowadays, I keep remembering George Carlin’s bit on Stuff; the same way Carlin jokes about how our lives are governed by our ‘stuff’, the business industry (and even our lives) is now more and more governed by ‘data’. And that makes sense. According to Statista, the total amount of data created, captured, copied, and consumed globally is forecast to increase rapidly: over the next four years up to 2025, global data creation is projected to grow to more than 180 zettabytes.

To better comprehend that number, Dave Reinsel from IDC made it a bit more tangible by saying that “a zettabyte is a trillion gigabytes, and if one was able to store the 175 zettabytes onto Blu-ray discs, then you would have a stack of discs that could get you to the Moon 23 times”.

Why do businesses need and use so much data? Because data is not only data. Data is information. Data is insights. Data is competitive advantage. Data is power. Data is key.
