Database Acceleration

We leverage automation and expertise to accelerate
your critical infrastructure components.

Performance and Flexibility

Databases run slower on virtual infrastructures like AWS or Azure, mainly because hypervisors slow down memory access, especially in high-memory configurations. VMWare provides a study describing this effect. According to our own studies, depending on the workload, the effect ranges from 25% to 50% slowdown compared to bare metal.

Bigstep provides a unique way of avoiding virtualization while preserving the flexibility associated with it. Our bare metal machines are provisioned on-demand but perform much better than virtual machines. The noisy neighbor effect is avoided and performance consistency is increased.

Using Automation to Scale

Bigstep makes heavy use of automation to deliver a reliable cluster as a service. We manage database provisioning and database scaling by adding new nodes or removing them from an existing cluster.
Our clusters are completely software-defined and on-demand and can be set up and torn down in minutes.

We currently integrate the following technologies, with more on the way:

Exasol
Datastax Enterprise
(Apache Cassandra)
Elasticsearch
Couchbase

Full Access or Fully Managed

All Bigstep clusters are automated. Through our Single Point of Contact support, we handle all inquiries related to the database and diagnose issues with the database vendor.
This way, you avoid the back and forth between the infrastructure and the software vendor.

Through the control center, you can scale the cluster, stop and resume, configure firewall rules, view logs and much more.

Secure Connectivity and Low Latency

Bigstep infrastructures operate as extensions of on-premises, AWS, Azure or GCE. Nodes are single-tenant and we use our state-of-the-art Layer 2 networking to isolate the nodes. We use a VPN software to securely connect to your existing infrastructure vendor.

The roundtrip latency between Bigstep and AWS, depending on the region, is around 5ms. For most applications, this is not noticeable.
However, lowering the execution time of complex joins from 2-3 seconds down to 1 second has a tremendous impact on user experience.
According to a recent study, 79% of shoppers who are dissatisfied with website performance are less likely to buy from the same site again.
